How to choose an electrician
Typical electricians jobs:
- Repairs: dead outlets, tripping breakers, flickering lights
- Upgrades: panels, circuits for new appliances, EV chargers, generators
- Lighting: indoor and landscape lighting, ceiling fans
- Ask for the contractor's license number and check it with the state before you hire.
- Ask whether the job needs a permit, who applies for it and whether its cost is in the quote.
- Describe the panel, the house age and the problem; photos of the panel help a quote.
- Compare what each quote includes: permit, inspection, materials, patching.
License, insurance and other details on a profile are stated by the company itself. BisHub shows them as provided and does not verify them — check a license with the issuing authority before you hire.
How requests work on BisHub
- Enter the ZIP code where the work will be done. The list then shows only companies whose service area includes that ZIP, with the approximate distance from their work base.
- Open a company profile to read its description, services, service area, hours and published reviews.
- Send a request to one company, or pick up to three and send the same request to each. Companies reply and send quotes inside BisHub; you choose whether to hire anyone.
- Requests are free for customers. BisHub is the platform the companies use — it is not the contractor, and it does not do the work.
Questions and answers
- Do electricians need a license in Florida?
- Yes. Electrical contracting without a state certification or registration is prohibited by s. 489.531 of the Florida Statutes. Certified electrical contractors (EC) may work anywhere in the state; registered ones (ER) only in the local jurisdictions where they are registered.
- How do I check an electrician's license?
- Search the name or license number in the DBPR license search (myfloridalicense.com).
- Can a handyman do small electrical jobs?
- Florida's $2,500 minor-work exemption (s. 489.103(9)) is part of the construction-contracting rules and does not apply to electrical contracting. Hire a licensed electrical contractor for electrical work.
